So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.īy her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. We witness her form a solid and strong friendship with local boy Rudy, develop a love for literature, fuelled by stolen books from the mayor’s wife’s library.Ī beautiful, lyrical heart-wrenching and powerful tale, rich with ingenuity and imagination, The Book Thief is a love letter to words to books to their power for both good and evil and to friends that become family. What follows is a poignant coming-of-age tale, in which the spirited young girl grows up against the backdrop of Nazi Germany. RELATED: My January picks for The Curio Collection And while Rosa is often foul-mouthed and abrasive, Hans swiftly becomes a beloved and supportive papa to the young girl. After her father’s capture and her brother’s death, she’s handed over to foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann who live on Himmell Street in the town of Molching, just outside Munich. Suffice to say that The Book Thief is the only story I’ve read that’s been narrated by death, and within the first chapter or two I was able to see why it’s been hailed by so many as a modern classic.Ī touching tale that follows the life of Liesel Meminger, a young girl who’s just shy of ten years old when we first meet her, The Book Thief is set is pre-WW II Germany. I’ve genuinely lost count of the amount of the amount of people who’ve told me to read it over the years, but it was only when I recently recorded a podcast with Clay Zane Comber – author and owner of beautiful bookshop Bouquiniste – that I finally moved it to the top of my never ending TBR pile and sat down to read it. First published sixteen years ago, I’ve owned various copies over the year – culminating one that Markus signed and dedicated to me after an event we hosted with him at Gertrude & Alice last year. I’m well aware I say this about an awful lot of books that I read – and subsequently write about – on The Literary Edit, but I have been meaning to read The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak for absolutely yonks.

I played through the original CD version of the game (with the CD in the drive for music’s sake), and I found 13 “music spots,” one of which used a duplicate tune. If you have the original Blue Shift CD, it’ll even play the correct tracks at the correct time! If you can’t or don’t want to use the CD, you can rearrange (via renaming) several of the MP3 files in the downloadable set to make the “correct” tunes play throughout a playthru of Steam’s Blue Shift. Oddly enough, Steam’s version of Blue Shift will play music from a music CD if you have one in your CD/DVD drive. That’ll get them to play in the game, but they won’t play in the “correct” order, going by when they play in the original version of Blue Shift (which I still have the original CD of). There won’t be a “media” directory there at first, so make one and then copy in all the MP3 files. I was having trouble getting the MP3 files in this package to play in Steam’s Blue Shift until Phillip told me that they need to be put in this directory: half-life blue shift\bshift\media. Quick thanks to Don for bringing this to my attention. If your gearbox folder doesn’t have a media folder, then create one and copy the files into there. We might brush it under the rug and suggest that it’s okay for Monster Harvest to launch essentially broken or unfinished, whatever you want to call it, because big AAA games do that and because Maple Powered Games is a small indie dev team. And I didn’t even experience any issues with saving like players on Steam did. But as it stands now, it seems like the game wasn’t quite ready yet. It may even become a great game! I hope it does. In a year or more, Monster Harvest may be a good game. And I’ll tell you, it’s objectively busted that the mount disappears and the game wipes the data from my stable after entering a single building. My job is to supply a dispassionate, impartial, informative, honest critique of the game as a product with an intended purpose, “to be playable”, while attempting to sort out the distinction between what is subjective and what is objective. Of course, I thought that maybe I should test it out with a new mount from a new planimal species on different buildings in different areas before I realized… it’s not my job to playtest this game. I tested it out four times in different buildings at different times of day. The thing I spent most of my gaming time planning for was actually pretty much useless. I couldn’t wait for a faster mode of transportation, no longer needing to rely on my avatar’s walking speed and awkward leaping dash.Įxcept when I got that mount, and managed to mash the button enough times to dismount, it disappeared whenever I entered a building and came back out. I watered and tended to it for a few days until it was ready. I saved up to build a stable, gathered the necessary resources to build that stable, and then saved up again to purchase a blue Super Slime to convert a plant into a planimal mount. That last one was actually the straw that broke the proverbial planimal’s back.

Players then vote for who they believe is an Impostor, if a plurality vote is obtained, the player who received the most votes is "ejected" from the game. Impostors can be identified beyond reasonable doubt if they are seen venting or killing a Crewmate, but ultimately players must weigh the veracity or value of each other's statements. During meetings, players discuss-via the in-game text chat or an external voice chat application such as Discord -who they believe to be Impostors based on available witness testimonies, with Impostors lying to hide their identity or falsely accusing other players. Īny living player may call a group meeting by reporting a dead body, or by pressing an Emergency Meeting button. As Impostors cannot perform tasks, Crewmates can use visual tasks to confirm their identity to nearby Crewmates. In addition, certain "visual tasks" provide animated cues, such as scanning oneself in the Skeld's medbay. To help Crewmates identify Impostors, there are various surveillance systems on each map, such as security cameras on The Skeld, a doorlog system with sensors in MIRA HQ, and a vitals indicator in Polus that shows the living status of all players. Impostors may enter and traverse ventilation ducts (commonly known as "venting"), and kill nearby Crewmates. Impostors, however, can perform sabotages, ranging from minor (such as disabling lights, limiting the Crewmates' vision) to critical (such as disabling oxygen generators), requiring immediate counteraction by Crewmates to prevent their deaths. Impostors cannot complete tasks, but may pretend to perform "fake" tasks to feign appearance as legitimate Crewmates. At the start of the game, Crewmates are assigned "tasks" to complete around the map in the form of minigames, minipuzzles, and simple toggles, mostly consisting of maintenance work on vital systems such as fixing wires and downloading data. Impostors can likewise win in two ways: either by killing or ejecting all Crewmates, or by sabotaging a critical system on the map (provided the Crewmates do not resolve it in time). The Crewmates can win the game one of two ways: either by completing all assigned tasks or by ejecting all Impostors. As of 2021, four playable maps are available: a spaceship called "The Skeld," an office building called "MIRA HQ," a planet base called "Polus," or "The Airship," a setting from Innersloth's Henry Stickmin series. Up to three players are randomly and secretly chosen to be the Impostors each round. While the game was initially released in 2018 to little mainstream attention, it received a massive influx of popularity in 2020 due to many Twitch streamers and YouTubers playing it and the COVID-19 pandemic. Crewmates work to complete assigned tasks in the game while identifying and voting out suspected Impostors (which appear identical to Crewmates) by means of social deduction, while Impostors have the objective of killing the Crewmates. Each player takes on one of two roles: most are Crewmates, but a small number are Impostors. Their status was tenuous, so they played through debilitating injuries. They were pitted against each other, knowing that a new arrival would mean a Black veteran would have to be let go. He laboured under an unspoken quota system capping the number of Black players to four or five per team, regardless of their talent. Reed also discovered subtler forms of racism. One Calgary coach forbade Black players from bringing white dates to the team banquet, even though one Black player’s wife was white. Reed said Black players on other CFL teams would get prank calls from teammates pretending to be members of the KKK. “OK, can I play with you guys now? Am I white enough for you?” the player said. Reed said that after one Roughrider practice, another Black player came out of the shower completely covered in white talcum powder. Some CFL players refused to shower at the same time as their Black teammates. He said most teammates were supportive, but that didn’t mean everyone was equal. “Being a Black man in Western Canada in the 1960s could be, to put it mildly, inconvenient.” “I discovered it wasn’t as tolerant as people made it out to be,” Reed said in his 2011 autobiography, George Reed: His Life and Times, co-written with John Chaput. He also rushed for the winning score in his first playoff game.īut off the field, Reed was questioning his decision to move to the Canadian Prairies. Reed made an immediate impression on the field for the Roughriders, scoring the winning touchdown in his first game. He signed a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, and arrived in Regina in 1963. But like other Black players, Reed had heard Canada was more inclusive. Several teams in the National Football League showed interest in Reed. He endured the long, painful rehabilitation, returned to the team, then rushed for more than 500 yards in his senior year and was named to the national all-star team. They broke off the other engagements, got to know each other better in weekly phone conversations and were married a year later.ĭuring a college game, Reed shattered several bones in his leg. So if you feel like messing around, give it a whirl. In short, it doesn't do any harm if you use the JA version in JK2 beyond making Mon Mothma look kinda freaky. It does properly read the "f" on the second line and adjusts the death messages accordingly, though. As a result, JK2 reads "mothma", looks for a folder within sounds called "mothma", doesn't find it, and therefore leaves the model soundless. JA's syntax just needs the name of the soundset folder within "chars". JK2 wants "chars/mothma/misc" followed by "f" on the next line to indicate Mon is a woman and it should read " killed herself" and so on when applicable. There is actually a soundset in JK2 called that, but the way sounds.cfg are written in JA is different than in JK2. The vanilla file has her using "mp_generic_female" instead of "mothma". Moreover, the JA model includes a sounds.cfg written for JA. Likewise, her boots are mostly black, save for a pair of brownish accents here and there. Her dress uses one of its two specular textures (the one to make the necklaces shiny, so it's entirely black save for them), while her mouth and eyes use their specular texture, making her eyes look a little creepy. The hologram of her that appears in the opening cutscene (after the opening crawl and the Raven's Claw flying towards Kejim) is untouched, since that appears to be one of three ROQ files (the ones used for pre-rendered cutscenes) and I have no idea how to edit those.įor the record, loading the JA version in JK2 doesn't crash the game (I deliberately didn't include the model.glm primarily to avoid unnecessary redundancy), but the shader parameters that JA uses to assign dynamic glow to stuff aren't programmed into JK2, resulting in errors if the model is loaded. That said, the icons still use JA-style backgrounds (which were made by Ruxith here on JKHub). Aside from removing the extras that only work in JA, it's the exact same reskin. This is my reskin of Mon Mothma for Jedi Academy, adjusted to work in Jedi Outcast. This file is entirely optional and is only here as a plus - or afterthought, if you will. Additionally, there is a complimentary saber color pack that adjusts some of the blade shapes to be slightly sharper with more contrast and fizzling. Some other details are entirely new, as it is meant to portray Kyle in a way that encapsulates the look or fantasy of some of his adventures from older games/stories. These skins attempt to retain most of the original artstyle of JK2 as some textures contain modified materials from other game characters the model is unchanged besides the omission of the drawstring collar. There are icons and red/blue team skins for visual clarity, and for those that want to use this skin in team-based, multiplayer modes. One is a younger, less-grayed appearance that calls back to Dark Forces II, while the other is slightly aged as Kyle should be by the time of Jedi Outcast. There are two variants for those that care more or less about continuity when using this mod, as the skin does overwrite the default Kyle skins for singleplayer and multiplayer whilst installed in the game directory. There's also a chestplate concealed underneath his suit from his Dark Trooper-dismantlin' days. With a thicker beard, classic black gloves, and a stuffed ammo belt, the New Republic Agent Katarn is ready to take on the Imperial Remnant with a bit more sentimentality. Blending elements from Dark Forces and Dark Forces II, these textures include modified details to depict this character in a more rugged, mercenary-esque look. Yes, another Kyle reskin! This skin pack pays homage to the original aesthetic and outfit designs of Jedi Knight's hero, Kyle Katarn. |
